UAHuntsville professor charged by Huntsville police following shooting
Amy Bishop, an associate professor at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, has been charged with one count of capital murder as a result of a deadly shooting incident on the university's campus Friday afternoon.
Three faculty members were killed, two other faculty members and one staff assistant was injured in the shooting. Additional charges are pending following an investigation, according to Huntsville Police Chief Henry Reyes. The Huntsville Police Department is leading the investigation.
The shooting took place in a third floor conference room in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology at approximately 4 p.m., January 12, 2010. Twelve members of the biological sciences department had gathered for a regularly scheduled faculty meeting.
Confirmed dead are Dr. Gopi Podila, chair of the university's biology department, Dr. Maria Davis, an associate professor of biology and Dr. Adriel Johnson, also an associate professor of biology. The injured have been identified as Dr. Joseph Leahy, associate professor of biology, and staff assistant Ms. Stephanie Monticciolo. Both were in critical condition at Huntsville Hospital Saturday afternoon. Dr. Luis Cruz-Vera, assistant professor of biology, was listed in stable condition and was able to leave the hospital on Saturday afternoon.
An emergency call reporting shots had been fired at the Shelby Center was placed with the Huntsville Police Department at 3:57 p.m. University police were first to arrive on the scene at 4:01, followed soon thereafter by the Huntsville Police and the Madison County Sheriff's Department. Dr. Bishop was arrested without incident outside the building just minutes after the call was made.
Dr. Bishop taught biology classes in the College of Science. She joined the university in the fall of 2003. She earned a doctorate from Harvard University and her research interests were in the field of neurobiology. She conducted research into ALS and Alzheimers diseases.
Chief Reyes confirmed that a 9 mm pistol was used in the shooting. Police recovered the weapon in a second floor bathroom in the Shelby Center.
Madison County District Attorney Rob Broussard said he anticipates that Dr. Bishop will have her first court hearing in approximately six weeks.
The university has provided grief counselors to the campus community and will be available next week as well. A private prayer vigil for UAHuntsville faculty, staff and students is scheduled for Sunday at noon at Spragins Hall on the UAHuntsville campus.
The campus will close February 15 through the 19th. All classes will be canceled and all campus and athletic events will also be canceled during the week of February 15 through 19. The university remains open for those faculty and staff who wish to report to work.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, February 19. Details will be forthcoming.
